A Day in Vrboska, the Little Venice of Hvar
Tucked away on the northern coast of Hvar, Vrboska is the smallest town on the island, yet one of the most charming. Often called the “Little Venice of Hvar” for its network of stone bridges crossing a narrow canal. Vrboska combines history, mystery, and tranquility in a way that few other places on the island can. Founded in the 15th century as a fishing village, it later grew into a vital hub for shipbuilding and trade. Today, it is known for its peaceful atmosphere, far less crowded than Hvar Town, Jelsa, or Stari Grad, making it the perfect spot to wander, slow down, and soak in the island’s authentic spirit.
Stop 1: The Fortress Church of St. Mary
We begin our walk at the Church of St. Mary (Fortress Church). This unusual building immediately captures the imagination: with its thick stone walls, sharp angles, and fortress-like design, it was not only a place of worship but also a stronghold for defense against pirate attacks in the 16th century. Standing before it, it’s easy to picture the days when the church protected the entire town.
Stop 2: The Canal and the Palm Island
From the church, head down to the canal’s edge. Right in the middle of the water, you’ll spot a tiny islet crowned by a single palm tree—one of the most photographed landmarks in Vrboska. Just beside it stands the first bridge, the youngest of all, offering an easy crossing between both sides of the town.
Stop 3: Wandering Along the Canal
The charm of Vrboska lies in its peaceful streets, stone houses, and quiet cafés. This is the perfect spot to enjoy an ice cream or sip a coffee while watching daily life unfold. As you walk along the canal, slow down and take in the details: fish swimming in the clear waters, swallows flying above, and the reflection of old houses in the calm surface of the canal.
Stop 4: The Historic Bridges
Continuing along the water, you’ll come across two smaller, older bridges. Built in a more traditional style, these bridges are part of Vrboska’s identity, giving it the nickname of “Little Venice.” For centuries, they have connected both sides of the town, carrying fishermen, traders, and now visitors, each bridge telling a small part of Vrboska’s story.
Stop 5: The Bay Beyond the Village
Once you’ve enjoyed the stroll through the village, cross the main bridge again and follow the road uphill. After about 15 minutes on foot, once you get to the end of the street, the road keeps going on a dirt road, keep walking and once you get to the end of the dirt road go left following the trial.

You’ll reach a hidden bay that feels like a slice of paradise. Here, you can swim, snorkel, or simply relax by the crystal-clear turquoise waters. Far from the crowds, this spot is the perfect reward at the end of your walk through Vrboska.

How to Get to Vrboska
Getting to Vrboska is simple with the local bus network on Hvar. Buses run daily from Hvar Town, Stari Grad, and Jelsa to Vrboska. The ride from Jelsa is the quickest (just a few minutes), while from Hvar Town you should expect about 45 minutes. Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver or at the main bus stations. If you prefer more flexibility, taxis and rental scooters are also widely available on the island. I’ll add to Timetables of the buses, one from high season (from June to September) and one from low season (after September)
