Vegetarian food in Budapest
This is a post that I would have liked to have when I first arrived in Hungary to find the best vegetarian food in Budapest.
Budapest might seem like a place where it is hard to find vegetarian options, but it’s actually quite the contrary. The most traditional foods in Budapest are Goulash and Lángos. Goulash could be hard to get as vegetarian, but Lángos is a different story, as the traditional one is vegetarian. There are also lots of bakeries around Budapest where you will find many sweets to try.
After living six months in this incredible city, I’ve found five restaurants that are either exclusively vegetarian or have many vegetarian options, and here they are! Most of them are excellent in terms of price and quality. So, here is the best vegetarian food in Budapest.
1 –KOZMOSZ
I’ll start with the best vegetarian food in Budapest because it deserves nothing less. Kozmosz is a highly regarded vegetarian restaurant in Budapest, known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious plant-based menu. The menu at Kosmosz features a diverse selection of international and Hungarian-inspired dishes. They also have a range of desserts, which are equally delightful and cater to various dietary preferences.
My favorite was the Gyros Plate. Another great option is the Burger or the Seitan Stew.

The prices vary between 2500 Forints (6,5€) to 3200 Forints (8€) per plate.
2 – Hummus Bar
Hummus Bar is a well known chain of eateries in Budapest, renowned for its Middle Eastern-inspired cuisine and, as the name suggests, its excellent hummus. With several locations throughout the city, Hummus Bar offers a casual and welcoming atmosphere where guests can enjoy healthy, flavourful, and affordable meals.
Hummus Bar is not just for vegetarians; their diverse menu caters to a wide range of dietary needs, including vegan and gluten-free options. The casual setting and friendly service make it a great spot for a quick lunch, a relaxed dinner, or even takeout.
Depending on where you are staying in Budapest you will need to google which is the closest one to you.
3 – Retro Lángos
Probably the most well-known Lángos place in Budapest. Having said this, it’s still part of the Budapest journey to eat in this popular place. One thing, this location is always full of people; always! But don’t distress, the people working there are well-oiled machines because once you order, it doesn’t take long to have what’s yours.
Langos are a deep-fried flatbread made from a simple dough of flour, yeast, salt, and water. After being fried to a golden brown, it’s traditionally served with garlic, sour cream, and grated cheese on top. You can also have it vegan and gluten free.
Prices vary between 2200 Forints (5,5€) and 4800 Forints (12€).

4 – Asian Street Food Budapest
Asian Street Food Budapest is an awesome option if you like eastern food because all of the cooks here are originally from there so the taste is just like in Asia.
This place is a popular eatery in the city that brings the vibrant and diverse flavours of Asian street food to the heart of Hungary. Known for its fast service, affordable prices, and authentic taste, this spot is a favourite among locals and tourists alike who crave a quick and delicious bite.
The menu at Asian Street Food Budapest offers a wide variety of dishes from different Asian cuisines, including Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Korean.
Every time I went to this place I had the Pad Thai which was the best I had outside Thailand.

5 – Las Vegan’s
This is probably the most costly one of all, but the location is right in the centre of the Jewish Quarter, exactly in front of Szimpla Kert (the most famous ruin bar in all of Budapest). So it can be a good option after having a couple of beers in the ruin bar.
It’s known for their delicious plant-based versions of classic favourites like burgers, hot dogs, and loaded fries.
Prices vary between 2900 Forints (7,3€) and 5000 Forints (12,5€)
